It will address both short and long term challenges and solutions. The project provides new research information and analysis on mobility between Helsinki-Tallinn and the regional transport system.

The project has started with a comprehensive mobility study carried out by the research partners and the next phase is to build 2-3 scenarios on the future needs of the transport system. Scenario building is based on analyzing of mobility patterns and demand, and on identifying of bottlenecks and problems which transport operators, ferry passengers, entrepreneurs and municipalities meet. Third type of input to scenario building is mapping of all the relevant development projects, measures and strategies.

Stakeholders of the transport system are organized in three advisory focus groups: Transport, Business Development and Urban Planning. These groups together with the project partners work out the recommendations of future development of Helsinki-Tallinn region.

The first focus group on business development will convene on the 22nd of September in Tallinn with the task to act as expert reference group to feed and comment the preparation of the transport scenarios.

The focus group meeting will be organised in the framework of the H-TTransPlan project. H-TTransPlan project works for improving transport connections between Helsinki and Tallinn metropolitan regions.

The first focus group on Urban Planning will convene on the 8th of September in Tallinn with the task to act as expert reference group to feed and comment the preparation of the transport scenarios.

The interregional roundtable on “Gulf of Finland – Baltic Sea Regional Transport Hub 2020?” will take place on the 7th of April 2011 in the Estonian National Library in Tallinn.

The interregional roundtable is a joint event by two EU-funded projects, Helsinki -Tallinn Transport and Planning Scenarios
(H-TTransPlan) and Rail Baltica Growth Corridor (RBGC) supported by the national and regional governance in the area, cities of Helsinki, St Petersburg and Tallinn and enterprises in the logistics sector.

The objective of the roundtable is to discuss the Gulf of Finland region’s transport challenges, visions and strategic initiatives. Tallinn-Helsinki transport system is both twin-regional and tightly integrated with broader Gulf of Finland area, as well as with the whole Baltic Sea Region. Rail Baltica project is the single largest development project in transport infrastructure in the Eastern Baltic Sea Region. Helsinki-Tallinn transport system is interrelated with Rail Baltica, and with the Rail Baltica Growth Corridor project.

The roundtable will provide an input for the development work of Helsinki-Tallinn transport and planning scenarios in the coming two years of work in HTTransPlan. This roundtable is also a step in RBGC project in establishing of Rail Baltica Transport Forum, a transport political platform and policy making arena for the Rail Baltica corridor stretching from Berlin to Tallinn/Helsinki and further to Saint Petersburg.
