The Uusimaa Regional Council is the main developer of the region, and its activities create the prerequisites for the well-being of the people, the development of economic life and the creation of pleasant surroundings.

The Council is responsible for the regional development work in its region and for land-use planing. It implements EU programmes and takes care of international relations. The Regional Council is a joint authority formed by its member municipalities. The Uusimaa Regional council comprises 24 municipalities.

Uusimaa has strong international traditions. Due to its location and status in the capital area, it is natural for the region to develop into a North-European centre to provide a bridge between the East and the West. Co-operation in the Baltic Sea Region will be developed as part of the Northern Dimension of the European policy.

The international operation of the Uusimaa Regional Council focuses on the drawing up, implementation and project consultancy for EU cross-border action programmes as well as on the development of co-operation methods and international network expertise. The aim of being involved in framework of Helsinki-Tallinn Euregio is to strengthen the status and conditions of operation of Uusimaa and its member municipalities in paritcular in the context of the Baltic Sea Region. Through international contacts, networks and mutual agreements the Uusimaa Regional Council enhance the involvement of municipalities and other actors in the area in international projects.
